An occasional jarring is always good for improving the blood flow, as the heart pumps a bit faster and the brain starts to move a bit faster...the thought is forced upon us from time to time, "What are we doing here at the ecovillage, and what makes us different?" If you think outside the box and are a pioneer spirit now is the time to jump into Kakwa. If you are not, need lots of structure, and always know how things will turn out before you begin then Kakwa is definitely not for you at this beginning stage of our growth. There are certain rules we need to follow for building, etc., and we do have a professionally developed Masterplan, but the reality is the ecovillage will be built 1 dream, 1 step and 1 permit at a time. So rather than walking into the subdivision or real estate office and picking out your lot/house as a member you have the opportunity to participate in many of the steps of real estate development and co-create the ecovillage with the other members. Some surprises are to be expected, but this way it's closer to what you might see as an ideal and as a member benefit on the cost savings from participating in the development process. If you have ever built a house you know what I mean... Take note, if ecovillages were so easy to bring to life, they would be everywhere, and they are not...But they are worth the effort!
The 2009 Harvest Celebration was a 2 part story this year with visitors coming, departing on Sat. and more arriving on Sunday. The weather was not too cold, but a bit damp so the tent shelters over the outdoor tables were perfect! There must be something about desserts this time of year! They took up their own table: pumpkin pie, squash cake, buckwheat nut cake, blueberry/apple/huckleberry pie, raspberry strudel...however, the turkey and wood grilled wild salmon were very much appreciated!
There are always a few special moments that I tend to tuck away. The 2 Great Pyrenees dogs that serve as guardians for our livestock were especially precious with the children. They are very big dogs, especially if you are 5 years old! One child was so scared that upon arrival she refused to exit the car. After some petting, and total submissive behavior by the dogs(including tummy rubs) the kids felt completely relaxed...as it should be. Later in the day, as we prepared to serve the meal the sounds of children's shrieks and laughter drifted up from the pasture below. It's the joyous sound of childhood that is always good to hear.
So our appreciation goes to: Stephan, Carla, Avra, Felix, Danny, Christine, Eve, Randy, Mary, Steve, James, Al, Sandy, Pete, Danielle, Collette, Larry, and Nancy for sharing another year of bountiful harvest, and fellowship at Kakwa Ecovillage Cooperative.
