Co-creation at the Ecovillage and Harvest Celebration 2009

An occasional jarring is always good for improving the blood flow, as the heart pumps a bit faster and the brain starts to move a bit faster...the thought is forced upon us from time to time, "What are we doing here at the ecovillage, and what makes us different?" If you think outside the box and are a pioneer spirit now is the time to jump into Kakwa. If you are not, need lots of structure, and always know how things will turn out before you begin then Kakwa is definitely not for you at this be… Continue

Middle of the Summer

Life here is like that in most homes. There are the crazy frenetic times of May/June and then the cycle moves to the other extreme. The busy times are full of people and projects. Now, the quiet times are full of serene moments. The garden is planted and doing well. With some regular weeding and watering it looks good. The squash crop last year that failed to fulfill its promise is likely to do extraordinarily well this year because of the extra heat units we are receiving.

After a day of misce… Continue

Summary of the Spring Gathering 2009 and the latest…

A lot smaller than anticipated, but the 2009 Spring Gathering was successful nonetheless. How does one gauge? When 3 people stay over for a 10-14 day visit from a weekend event the effort seems justified! The weather was cooperative with the warmest day of the year on May 2nd, 22C. Great food, camaderie, hikes, campfire, Circle Dance, lots of Q & A, and no bugs rounded out the weekend. Thanks to Dom & Diane, Jeff, Kerry, & Micah for the energy you lent to the event! For those that co… Continue

Feels like Spring Newsletter!

Okay, okay I realize we Northerners can get a little excited this time of year…it was a spectacular sunny day today and +10C/50F! The soon to come green pasture won’t be ready for the alpacas until ~ April 15th so we’ve got some cool weather still ahead. However, Spring is always welcomed when it arrives. Think t-shirts and flowers!

Recent Events:
Seedy Saturday in Prince George was a lot of fun this year! Very busy with people sharing seeds, selling seeds, booths on: local food,… Continue

January 2009 Newsletter

Hello everyone!

Some days just feel good! Yes, it’s still Winter (+1C the other night. Warmest of 2009 so far!) and lots of snow on the ground. Looking back over our 2.5 years of Alpaca shepherding, their care and shearing I have to say this sort of feedback (received with a repeat purchase from a satisfied customer) makes me feel like we are on the right track:

“…these are bar none the best socks I have ever owned including ones I knit myself!...” My order is for 8 more pair.

Hi
I am building a small house a few minutes outside of Whitehorse. Off grid and no mortgage. Recently i read a book regarding looming energy shortages and it resonated with me. Its just a fact that I am absolutely dependent on oil to function, including feeding myself, and this worries me to a degree. I want to investigate what it takes to be prepared for the day when walmart closes its doors, so to speak. I think it may be logical to live in a location where there are like minded folks and a longer growing season.
In general just looking at a better way to live, sustainability, ect.
Good to know there is already a movement in the right direction.
cheers
Murray

Hello Russ - Thanks for letting me know about this site, and for adding me! Hopefully I'll be seeing you at the Harvest festival :) I'm really looking forward to being back in the beauty and bounty of Robson Valley, and looking forward to learning more about Kakwa.

Peace,
D

Hi Russ,

thank you for having me as a member and you welcome for the site, I am sure you will find some great readings there :).
So, you already know my wife, Eniko, she signed up quite a while ago and we keep planning to visit you. We are still living in a Camphill community but decided that this will be the last year. The next step in life should cross somehow an eco-village so here I am, browsing through my favorite eco-village links :).
peace,
J.

Hey there Ross - How's Edmonton? huh huh ... I hear a rock&roll lyric in my head (Talking Heads?) "Same as it ever was". ;-)

That's a loaded question for me; came home after 20yrs in NS (raised 5 kidz in a big old house on Barra Glen Road in Cape Breton) and *sigh* kinda like I figured in the 70s: this place is addled by petro-dollars.
But more of that lately.

Soooo glad to have found this group! Now I'm gonna spider the site see if I can figure out where you are.

cheers

That seems like a very long way from Vancouver. In that case we might be able to come out in July. We have a two week holiday and we planned already a tour in the Rockies (Banff, Jaspers), so we can have Kawka in our way.
I am sorry we miss the May 1st event, would have liked to socialize with people with similar ideals. But we have only two days off, thats not enough time for the trip.
I am already very excited to come out and visit you in July. Lets keep in touch meanwhile and I will check the website for the news!
Best
Eniko

Dear Russ,
Thank you for the invitation! Its a bit short notice for May 1 though, so I cannot promise anything. However we got really excited from the idea to visit Kakwa. We have a holiday on May 18th, which is a Monday, that is a promising long weekend as a possibility. However, we don't even know if we are available that time, as we have two young individuals with disabilities living with us. Anyways, how far is your place from Vancouver (by car)? Or is there any other possibility we can come (bus or train)?
If we cannot come out in May, I am sure we can still pay you a visit during the summer. We will try our best.
Its very exciting that you have such a nice supporting circle around you, it probably doesn't really feel so lonely. We liked a lot your pictures on the website, it seems that your place attracts a lot of very good people.
Yes, Steiner came out with some amazing stuff. We are members of the Antroposophical Society and try to learn what he wrote. I was really happy when I realized that Eco-villages were initiated by Waldorf circles. Do you have a bio-dynamic agriculture at your place?
Thats all for now, have a wonderful evening,
Best wishes:
Eniko

Hi there Russ,
thank you for accepting me! My husband and I are living in Camphill Communities since 3 years now and are heading for another year but meanwhile dreaming about something like your place is. We are 29 and 31, vegetarians, organic, Hungarians, adventurous. Kakwa Ecovillage looks like a wonderful place. We are hoping to get to know you and visit you in the near future. How many of you are permanent residents of the village, what activities are you doing, what are the basic skills you require from a villager?
Wishing you the best:

Eniko
