Hi Gary,

Harvest Celebrations are usually in the Fall here, before or after Canadian Thanksgiving which is Oct. 12th this year.

Train travel by Via Rail is dependable year around. We expect the first snow that stays ~ Nov. 1st. We have some accommodations for visitors in the Common House, as well as a more rustic cabin by the river.

We like to have at least 2 weeks advance notice for potential extended stays.
There is reservation information on the main web site: www.kakwaecovillage.com . Depending on the length of stay we might require more information regarding an individual, their interests & skills.

You might also consider becoming a Supporting Member: http://www.kakwaecovillage.com/membership.php. It allows you to become a bit more involved prior to exploring full-time residence.

Hafa Ada'i from Guam. Just a couple quick questions, at this time, about your Harvest celebrations: When will the 2009 one take place.... also, for visitors wishing to overstay and contribute skills they have/gain practical work experience in areas where they need it, what are the practical constraints (onset of severe weather, transportation out [train], existing accomodations for visitors). Ah... and maybe I'm being presumptious here -- is there a screening/application process for such a work study/visit?

Hi Russ,

I think the fellow who said this to me (Ontario owner of safelivingtechnologies.ca) may have been thinking of situations where people live in three-story townhouses or taller and only have a back yard to put it in. I'm not sure how wide the beam is to the satellite, but this might be the issue if it clips the building.

Another 'expert' told me there can be some spill out around the sides and back but I think he was talking about EMF vs EMR because it had to do with proper grounding. I recently found out that internet vs TV satellite dishes must be installed by a certified installer so grounding wouldn't be an issue there.

I'm very glad to hear that you are aware of this environmental issue.

Hey Kerry,

Sent you a private message.

I'm fairly knowledgeable about EMF, and various types of radiation. We don't have wireless or microwave units on site. No plans to include them. Our satellite is hard-wired as is our router. However, I can't imagine any off site public building or new subdivision being without wifi these days. Must be tough for you.

Not sure I understand how a satellite could be pointing at a house and still be functional. By design I would think they must be pointing in the air at a satellite?

Hi Jenn and Russ,

I am looking for an ecovillage to join and as I read your conversation I was compelled to contact you about the dangers of electromagnetic radiation from wireless technology. I know this is still deemed a controversial topic despite the many recent studies done worldwide by independent reputable scientists. They've found that the regulations for emissions are outdated and unsafe.

We're basically going through the same thing with this industry as we did with the tobacco industry (and others) in years gone by. However, this is a much greater threat as a much larger percentage of the world's population is rapidly becoming dependent on it, in some cases to the point of addiction.

Given that Kakwa is an ecovillage, I encourage you to learn about how this man-made enviro hazard of electromagnetic radiation (EMR microwaves) impacts the health of humans (especially the young and old), animals, insects, birds, and even plants. A good scientific place to start is to Google the "Bioinitiative Report" and follow their link as well as the youtube link. Coast to Coast radio has a great series of interviews too if you Google "Cindy Sage" within youtube. Eventually, this tech will probably encroach on Kakwa, but it is probably fairly safe for quite some time being where it is. That's one important thing that interests me about it. Satellite broadband, if installed away from the house at least 150' and pointing away from the house, is safe. I also need it for my graphic design business but use it wired versus wireless.

Your thoughts?

Kerry

Are there any other technical solutions that could perform the same functions as your exisiting instrument, but without it's technical limitations?
What you will discover in much, if not all, of Canada is that wireless/cable/ dsl are only options in the big cities. Also, you might run the technical features we have here by your phone provider. There is a huge difference between download of 520Kbs and 2Mb.

Do you know it's speed requirement to operate with full functionality?

Hi Jenn,

I wouldn't recommend VOIP via satellite for consistent service. However, we currently already have 25 pair of landline telephone connections to our site. I suppose for your telephone work with the right sort of instrument you could continue that aspect unimpeded.

Hi Jenn,

We get by reasonably well here with satellite broadband, although the current max. speeds are limited to 500Kbs upload and 2MB download.

Hi Jenn,

I'm lost on the relationship between cell phone and internet access? We have no cell phone coverage here. I'm in manager/care taker mode and the only current full time resident. As I may have mentioned we first opened to new members in 2005...it takes a while to get the ball rolling.
